Educate yourself about ADHD if you even suspect it in your child. Don't just run off to the doctor for treatment until you've tried these tips. Even a normal child can exhibit ADHD symptoms from time to time. This is not a disorder that children can just outgrow. The best thing to do is observe your child for a period of not less than six months for changing, worsening or disappearing behaviors. It is however your decision whether or not to consult your physician. This article was developed to help you realize all you need to know about treatment options.
There are all kinds of stories about children who are ADHD and their medication.
These often negative stories talk about a child's behavior post medication. While on a stimulant regiment to treat ADHD, some children have been said to become too emotionally dull, for example. Here's what you need to know about that kind of situation. Improper dosage of stimulant medication is the most likely cause of this reaction. The point about dosage is your doctor needs to find the correct dosage for your child. There will generally be side effects, but if you keep your doctor informed, he or she can make any adjustments necessary. Or your doctor may opt to try a different medication. The systematic approach is the highest recommended method of treatment according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Basically what that means is your doctor will follow a proven approach to closely matching the best medication based on your child's symptoms. 80% of all ADHD children treated in this manner will have positive results of treatment. Medication for a child with ADHD requires that your physician be well versed in the systemic method of treatment.
The American Academy of Pediatrics does however consider a treatment failure to exist if a child does not respond favorably after roughly two to three different types of stimulant medication treatments. A reevaluation is necessary at this point. It's your call but you might want to consider getting another opinion. It can be a matter of mistaken diagnosis, causign your child's behavior. Learning disabilities, bipolarism and depression are among the conditions that can mimic ADHD.
Your ADHD child will be most frustrated by the initial phases of diagnosis, evaluation, and beginning treatment. It's helpful to realize that each child is unique and must have a special plan for treatment created. But it's important to remain positive and to monitor your child's progress. Your doctor can more easily determine what changes, if any, need to be made this way. You should also talk to your doctor about what you can do at home to help manage your child's ADHD.
A few moms and dads think because their kid can't read they have ADHD. But they can read using phonics, so that is not the case.
